How Craniosacral Therapy Can Help With Back Pain

by | Feb 29, 2024 | Alternative Healing, Craniosacral Therapy

Let’s be honest, if you’re reading this, your back probably isn’t feeling its best. Maybe it’s a dull ache that never quite goes away, or a sharp twinge after too many hours at your desk. Lower back pain is incredibly common, especially for those of us who spend our days hunched over keyboards and spreadsheets. The good news is, there’s a gentle, effective therapy that might just bring you the relief you’ve been searching for: craniosacral therapy.

Okay, but…what exactly IS Craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a hands-on therapy that focuses on – you guessed it – your cranium (your skull, basically) and your sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of your spine). You see, inside your head and spine is a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid acts like a cushion and nutrient-delivery system for your brain and spinal cord – your body’s central command center.

CST therapists believe that restrictions or imbalances in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid can create tension and stress throughout your body, including your lower back. During a CST session, a therapist uses a very light touch – about the weight of a small coin – to feel for these imbalances and gently encourage the natural, rhythmic flow of your cerebrospinal fluid.

Sounds a bit out there, right?

If the idea of someone subtly manipulating your head and sacrum sounds a bit strange, I get it! It’s definitely not a conventional treatment. But there’s growing evidence that CST can be incredibly helpful for a whole range of conditions, including lower back pain.

How Craniosacral Therapy Helps Back Pain

CST can help

Releases Tension: We carry a LOT of tension in our bodies, especially from stress, poor posture, and old injuries. CST helps release deep-seated tension patterns in the connective tissue (called fascia) throughout the body, including your back muscles, spinal ligaments, and even the membranes surrounding your spinal cord.

Reduces Inflammation: Inflammation is a major player in back pain. CST helps calm your nervous system and reduces inflammation, promoting a healing state in your body.

Improve Mind-Body Connection: Back pain isn’t just physical. Stress and emotions can make it a whole lot worse. CST helps you tune into your body, fostering a sense of relaxation and well-being that extends far beyond the treatment table.

What will a CST session feel like?

Honestly, probably a bit weird at first! But in a good way. CST is very gentle.  You’ll lie fully clothed on a massage table, and your therapist will use that light touch we talked about to assess and address subtle restrictions.  Most people find it deeply relaxing; you may even doze off.

How many sessions will I need?

Like most therapies, it’s not a one-and-done deal. However, many people report feeling a huge difference after even their first CST session. Your therapist will work with you to create a personalized plan, but a series of sessions is typical to really see lasting results.

Is CST right for me?

CST is completely safe and suitable for almost everyone. Since it’s so gentle, it’s even a great option for those who are hesitant about things like chiropractic adjustments.  However, if you have any serious medical conditions, it’s always best to check with your doctor first.
